FEMA EMI: Emergency Management Institute
All Red Cross disaster volunteers with a direct role in emergency preparedness, incident management, or response are required to complete FEMA's IS-100 and IS-700 courses. IS-200 and IS-800 courses are recommended. Once you have completed the required courses, you must print out the certificate at the end of the training and submit it to the chapter for your DSHR record.

To access any of these courses, go to http://training.fema.gov/is/crslist.asp. Scroll down until you find the course you want, click on the course title. On the following page in the upper right portion of the page you will see a box titled “Take This Course”. In that box click on the link titled “Interactive Web-based Course.”

Required FEMA Courses:
IS-100 - Introduction to Incident Command System

ICS-100 is the self-study introduction course to the Incident Command System. It introduces the basic functions of the Incident Command System and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principals, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

IS-700 - National Incident Management Systems (NIMS), An Introduction
IS-700 is a web-based awareness level course that explains NIMS components, concepts and principals. Although it is designed to be taken online interactively, course materials may be downloaded and used in a group or classroom setting. Answer sheets are available from the Emergency Management Institute's Independent Study Office at (301) 447-1256.

Recommended FEMA Courses:
IS-200 - ICA for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
ICS 200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS. ICS-100 is a pre-requisite to the IS-200 course. This course is designed to be taken online, although printed materials are available.

IS-800 - A National Response Plan (NRP), An Introduction
IS-800 National Response Plan describes how the Federal Government will work in concert with state, local and tribal governments and the private sector to respond to disasters. This course introduces the NRP. This course is designed to be taken online.
