The Emergency Response program trains individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a first responder in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help can arrive. Emergency Response meets the 1995 DOT standards.

Currently, no Emergency Response courses are schedule. This course is in the process of being rewritten and new course materials are in development. The new course is scheduled for release during Spring or Summer of 2010 at which time we will begin to offer this course.

Attendance:

Attendance is required at each class. If one or more days are missed, you will not be certified and the class is non-refundable.

Prerequisites:

A weight of at least 90 lbs. and a 7th grade reading level

Topics covered in this course includes (but is not limited to):

How the EMS system works and how often the first responder's role in the EMS system differ from a citizen responder's role.
Steps to assure the well being of the first responder.
Guidelines to follow to ensure the personal safety of the first responder and the safety of others at an emergency scene.
What happens in the body if one or more body systems fail.
Ways in which diseases are transmitted and body substance isolation techniques to prevent disease transmission.
When to move a victim in an emergency and the appropriate methods for doing so.
How to assess a victim's condition.
Breathing emergencies, such as airway obstruction, and how to provide proper care for them.
Breathing devices and how to use them.
Signs and symptoms of a possible heart attack, and how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain and/or other signs and symptoms of heart attack.
Signs of cardiac arrest, and how to provide CPR.
Major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and injury, and how to control them.
Life-threatening bleeding and how to control it.
Signs and symptoms of shock and how to minimize its effects.
Signs and symptoms of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and how to care for them.
Recognize the signs and symptoms of medical and behavioral emergencies, including altered mental status, seizures, poisoning, heat and cold emergencies, and stroke and describe both general and specific are for medical and behavioral emergencies.
Common types of medical and trauma emergencies in infants and children and how to care for them.
How to properly use and AED in a cardiac arrest situation.
How to prepare equipment and administer supplemental oxygen to breathing or non-breathing persons.
How to measure and insert an oral and nasal airway.
Techniques of suctioning.
