Sudden
cardiac arrest claims 220,000 Americans each year. It can happy
any time, any where, to anyone. For every minute that sudden
cardiac arrest goes untreated, the chance surviving decrease
by 10 percent. The best chance of survival is to receive life-saving
CPR and defibrillation (an electric shock that can restore an
effective heart rhythm) within the first four minutes of collapse.
Early defibrillation is the third link in the "Chain of
Survival" which includes:
Early recognition
and early access (calling 911 or other emergency number)
Early CPR
Early defibrillation
Early advanced life support (treatment and transport to
a hospital by EMS)
Thanks to an easy-to-use,
portable device called an Automated External Defibrillator
(AED) and American Red Cross training on how to use it, ordinary
people can save lives. It is estimated that the broad deployment
of AEDs at worksites, malls, airports and other places where
large groups of people gather, and the presence of people
trained to use them, could save up to 50,000 lives every year.
Now is the time
to act. Our Good
Samaritan Law here in Colorado protects us from liability
when using an AED. Let the American Red Cross help you learn
to perform CPR and use an AED.

a class, see CPR and First Aid Classes.
