Sudden
cardiac arrest claims 220,000 Americans each year. It can happy any time,
any where, to anyone. For every minute that sudden cardiac arrest goes untreated,
the chance surviving decrease by 10 percent. The best chance of survival
is to receive life-saving CPR and defibrillation (an electric shock that
can restore an effective heart rhythm) within the first four minutes of
collapse. Early defibrillation is the third link in the "Chain of Survival"
which includes:
Thanks to an easy-to-use, portable device called an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and American Red Cross training on how to use it, ordinary people can save lives. It is estimated that the broad deployment of AEDs at worksites, malls, airports and other places where large groups of people gather, and the presence of people trained to use them, could save up to 50,000 lives every year.
