"Red
Cross has restored my faith in believing that people really
do care about others. Our angel was watching over us, but
another angel came to us in the name of Red Cross."
- Disaster
Client, October 2004
The American Red Cross has been helping people since 1881.
Our symbol (the red cross) is the second most widely recognized
symbol in the world. Our purpose is to:
- Help people
who have experienced a disaster or life-threatening emergency
- Educate people to prevent and prepare for various emergencies.
Everyone lives
in a safer place when the Red Cross is strong and can live
up to its humanitarian mission in our area.
The mission
of the American Red Cross is to assist victims of disaster
and to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
We achieve this mission through provisions of the following
services:
Disaster
Response Services
The American Red Cross is distinct from other organizations
because we are mandated by Congress to provide immediate care
and support to disaster victims. No recipient is ever charged
for services, and no direct federal aid is received by the
American Red Cross for those services.
"Red
Cross was so kind and they always had warming smiles on their
faces...I have much more respect for people because the comfort
Red Cross gave me only made me think that it’s fair to spread
the kindness...Thank you Red Cross."

Disaster Preparedness Education
The Pikes Peak Chapter teaches citizens to prevent and prepare
for local disasters with audience specific presentations.
We reach students in area schools by providing educational
resources, like Masters of Disaster and Facing Fear, which
are designed to mesh with existing lesson plans. Disaster
planning information for families is provided to adults in
the community and at work.
" I felt like the training was FAR SUPERIOR to any I
have taken in the past ...
(the instructor) made the information easy to digest, and
we all felt very involved "
- Paul
Madden, Boeing
Armed Forces
Emergency Services
The American Red Cross is the only recognized emergency communications
link between family members and service persons in the armed
forces. Verification of emergency information is provided
by Red Cross caseworkers to enable military personnel to make
decisions about allowing a service person to return home.
"Of
those angels who pulled the family through, none were as vital
as American Red Cross
who were there before the fire was even out"
- R. Scott Rappold, The Gazette
Health and Safety Services
Thousands of people learn critical skills in Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, Automated External Defibrillation
(AED), water safety, and preventing disease transmission.
We also attend health fairs providing free information about
safety precautions and how to assist choking victims.
"One
of our two and a half year old sons was chocking and, fortunately,
my husband remembered enough of what he learned at a CPR class
to dislodge the food. The incident brought into clear focus
just how much more informed and prepared we ought to be."
- Anglea
Klaassen, Colorado Springs Resident
Volunteerism
Your Red Cross is supported by more than twenty volunteers
for every one paid staff member.
